Jim Merz, FCAS is Chief Actuarial and Analytics Officer at Westfield Insurance. His role is designed to guide-data driven decisions and unify the actuarial department and Analytics Resource Center. He is a strong advocate promoting the value and proper care of data. Jim is a continuous learner and innovator. He is evolving Westfield’s analytics along the spectrum from descriptive to predictive and prescriptive. His team is advancing analytics, data science, and utilizing risk segmentation as a tool for customer advocacy. Jim has more than 30 years of experience with national and international carriers. At his prior employer, a top twenty-five property and casualty, he served as Vice President and Chief Actuary. In this role, he evolved the operating model of the actuarial community including driving the inception of actuarial support for the new specialty commercial area. He led actuarial for eight acquisitions, including a $1 billion direct written premium entity and had extensive experience dealing with multiple departments of insurances, including expert testimony.
Jim has served on the Casualty Actuarial Society Board of Directors. In addition, he has served on various other CAS and industry committees, including the CAS Leadership Development Committee, Grading Committees and the CAS Disciplinary Committee. His co-authored research paper, “Considerations in Estimating Loss Cost Trends” was published in CAS Forum. He has experiences in all aspects of risk management, leadership and insurance.
Jim earned his Master of Science in Mathematics from John Carroll University and Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics from Kent State University. He is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries. In addition, he possesses the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Associate in Reinsurance (ARe) designations.
